This paper argues that adaptive leadership — long treated as a specialized skill for exceptional leaders navigating exceptional circumstances — has become a baseline requirement across every leadership level, and proposes a practical playbook for building it deliberately rather than hoping it emerges under pressure. The playbook rests on four capacities — sensing, reframing, experimenting, and mobilizing — and on the recognition that adaptive capability is as much an organizational design property as an individual leadership trait.
