Enterprise AI is entering what practitioners are calling the year of orchestration: the center of gravity is shifting from individual employees using individual AI tools toward multiple AI agents coordinating across what used to be separate departmental workflows. The autonomous AI agent market is projected to reach $8.5 billion in 2026 and $35 billion by 2030, and by 2026 an estimated 40% of enterprise applications integrate autonomous agents in some form. But scale is outpacing coordination: Gartner's research finds 68% of organizations cite governance gaps as the primary barrier to scaling AI agent deployments, and IDC projects that leading enterprises will run hundreds or thousands of specialized agents by 2028, compared to the 10 to 50 agents most early adopters are running today — a jump in complexity most organizations' current operating models are not built to manage.
